Two kids fall in love at age fourteen. The girl gets pregnant, and at sixteen, they marry. It is an unlikely beginning to a success story. But that is chapter one of the story of Ron and Cristy Varela of Varela Companies, the umbrella corporation for a multi-million dollar business.
Determined to provide for his family, Ron moved through a succession of jobs, each one paying a little bit more than before. Ron’s career finally took a gigantic leap forward when he got a job at a trucking company, even though he couldn’t drive a truck.
This opportunity opened his eyes to the construction business. He saw a lot of potential, even though he was inexperienced in that area as well. “I’ve always had big vision,” says Ron. “I just figured I could do it.” Figure it out he did. Before long, Ron and Cristy had built their own thirty million dollar a year excavation and grading company.
Thinking he was invincible, Ron started reaping some of the benefits of success. His particular vice was alcohol. Soon, his drinking became a serious problem.
Ron couldn’t see this until he faced the potential loss of his business and a drunk driving charge. Realizing he couldn’t make it on his own, Ron and his family started to attend church. This drew their family together and helped Ron to see his business as a tool to help others rather than a way to feather his own nest.
Ron and Cristy say their secret to success is simple: hard work and perseverance. “God has given us the courage to go forward,” says Cristy. “We trust each other. And we trust Him.”
